Salou

Introduction
The Selection
Salou, in the Costa Daurada, is one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations - and it is not difficult to understand why. It has magnificent beaches, great shopping, a fantastic array of bars and restaurants, and a vibrant night life. In addition it has one of Europe's best theme parks, Universal's Mediterranea, with it's Port Aventura and Caribe Aquatic Park as well as two other water parks, Aquapark and Aquapolis. Its location, near Tarragona, within striking distance of Barcelona and just 6 kms. from Reus Airport add to its deserved popularity.

Salou's Beaches

  • Llevant Beach: The town's main beach is Llevant which stretches some 1.2 kms. and is about 140 metres wide. It is a natural beach with fine, golden sand that slopes gently into the sea, making it safe for children. Between the beach and the town runs the long, wide, attractive Jaume 1 Promenade.
  • Ponent Beach: This beach, which is almost as long as Llevant but not quite as wide, stretches Westward towards Cambrils from the old town and port area. It is also a natural beach with fine sand, slopping gently into the sea, and has a promenade along its entire length, albeit not as wide as the one along Llevant Beach.
  • Capellans Beach: This is an attractive small beach just beyond LLevant. As with the other beaches, the sand slopes gently into the sea making it safe for children. It is thus very popular with the residents and visitors staying in the vicinity.
  • Llarga Beach: Further East, between Capellans Beach and the Cap de Salou area is this 600 meter long beach surrounded by pine trees. It is a beach of great natural beauty and is frequented mainly by residents of the Cap de Salou and Capellans areas.
  • Llenguadets Beach: This is a small cove just beyond Capellans and also surrounded by pines. It is only accessible on foot from Torrassa Street.
  • Penya Tallada, Cala de la Font and Cala Crancs: These are three other small coves beyond Llarga Beach. They are all accessible by road.
  • La Pineda Beach: Beyond the Cap de Salou is the very long wide beach of La Pineda. There are mainly new developments in this area.

Places of Interest in Salou

  • The Jaume 1 Promenade: Salou's seafront promenade "par excellence" bordering the entire length of Llevant Beach is unique on the whole Mediterranean Coast. With its mature palm trees, flower beds, seating and children's play areas it is a great place for a stroll at any time of the day or evening.
  • La Torre Vella: This is a defensive watchtower built in 1430 to help protect Salou against the constant attacks by pirates. Today it has been converted into an important cultural centre which holds art exhibitions and houses the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Enamel Art.
  • Avant-garde Architecture: Walking along the Jaume 1 Promenade, we come across examples of this turn of the twentieth century style of architecture which has left its mark on Salou in such emblematic buildings as the Chalet Voramar, otherwise known as the Casa Bonet. This grand residence is the work of the architect Domenech Sugranyes Gras, a follower of the grand master, Antoni Gaudi.
  • The Illuminated Fountain: This fountain is situated at the Eastern end of the Jaume 1 Promenade. It displays as many as 220 different combinations of water and light.
  • The Masia Catalana: This is a life-size replica of a traditional Catalan farmhouse. In summer, the grounds of the "farm" are home to the evening Handicrafts Market.
  • The Parque de Salou: This is a large municipal park with a multitude of plants and flowers. This "green lung" is at the heart of the resort's tourist district.

Leisure and Entertainment in Salou

Salou is a young, active and highly dynamic town in which leisure and entertainment are its main characteristics. Visitors of all ages will find everything they want in a holiday in this self-styled capital of the Costa Daurada.
Mini-Trains: The municipality has several mini-trains that take visitors round the town. This is an excellent way of seeing and getting to know the whole resort on a relaxing journey through its scenic beauty, old town and shopping streets.
Salou by Night: The nightlife of "The Capital of the Costa Daurada" has something for everyone - from the liveliest to the most laid back, from music bars and discotheques to quiet beach-side cafe terraces.

Places of Interest Near Salou

Cambrils: This very attractive fishing come resort town is just along the road from Salou. Being just approximately 6 kms from the port area of Salou to the centre of Cambrils it makes for a very pleasant walk along the seafront promenade. Though possibly not quite as pleasant walking back! You can also go by bus or by train.
Tarragona: The provincial capital is just 10 kms away and is well worth a visit. It has recently been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Tourist Board offers guided tours of the city and the marvellous sites of Roman Tarraco, such as the Amphitheatre, the Circus, the Praetorium, the Roman Walls, the museum, etc. You can get there by bus or by train.
Montblanc: This small town is located in a privileged site on top of a small hill that commands a sweeping view of the area. The well preserved 14th century ramparts surround the very interesting old part of the town. Well worth a visit. It is approximately 40 kms from Salou.
Barcelona: Barcelona is an open, Mediterranean city with a rich architectural and monumental heritage. It is the city of Gaudi and Art Nouveau architecture, but it is also a city of culture and entertainment. It has a wealth of places to visit, including the unfinished Holy Family Church, the port, the Olympic Village, the Gothic Quarter, the Placa Catalunya, the famous Ramblas and numerous museums and art galleries. It is approximately 100 kms. from Salou. You can get there by bus or by train.
Montserrat: This impressive monastery is located high on the mountain some 95 kms. from Salou. It is where Catalans venerate the patron saint of their country, Our Lady of Montserrat. Unless you have your own transport it is probably better to go on an organised excursion.
