Amersfoort is one of the Netherlands best kept secrets.
This amazing city is not only one of the 20 largest cities
in the Netherlands, but it is also centrally located on the Eem River.
The city is filled with wonderful canals, surrounded by beautiful
homes and intimate gardens. Amersfoort is one of the few European
cities with an old world feel and flavor but also all the amenities you would
expect in the 21st century.
Getting There
Amersfoort is located is well served by

Amersfoort has over 380 monuments, a 14th century water gate,
the 15th century Gate of Our Lady, and medieval homes located in old town.

In General
Amersfoort has three city gates built in the 15th century: Kamperbinnenpoort,
Koppelpoort, and Monnikendam. The river enters the city at the Monnikendam
gate and exits at the land and water gate, Koppelpoort.
To get a idea of the 'lay of the land' go to
St. Mary's Tower or De Onze lieve vrouwentore. It is the largest building in Amersfoort
and visitors can climb the 346 stairs to the top of the 98 meters building
to enjoy the magnificent view.
Amersfoort is the only city in the Netherlands with 'Muurhuizen', literally wall houses.
These homes are located on the north side of Amersfoort and formed part of the defense wall.
More recently, in 1941 Amersfoort was the site of one of the only Nazi concentration camp in
the Netherlands. Over 35, ooo Dutch people were imprisoned at the camp.
Things to Do
Amersfoort was renowned for its many quality beer breweries.
Today, the
De Drie Ringen Brewery,
situated between Museum Flehite and de Koppelpoort,
is the only one left in Amersfoort.
The brewery uses traditional Amersfoort techniques. Admission is free but the beer is not.
The famous artist,
Piet Mondriann was born in Amersfoort in 1872. The house he was born in,
'Mondriaanhuis'
is now a museum which holds a fine collection of his most famous artworks.
Also
Museum Flehite,
composed of three mansions built around 1500,
contains a collection of applied and decorative art.
The museum is part of the Amersfoort Walking Tour. Paid entrance
includes a visit to the Mondriaanhuis, across the street.
The De Zonneho museum , designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld,
has modern art exhibits.
Amersfoort Zoo located on stately green scenery and with over 6000 animals
offers a great day out for all the family.
An unlikely respite for adults is offered by a day at
Monkey Town. An indoor playground for children.
Ski-Fun offers
Skiing and snowboarding activities all year-round. The facility offers
