Madrid, capital city of Spain, is situated centrally on the Iberian peninsula
and 646 metres above sea level.
This means that generally Madrid has a dry, cool and sunny climate.
Start off with a walk arround the historic old town
with its Plaza Mayor, built in 1620 and to this day is
one of Spain's most popular and typical squares.
Nearby is the 17th century Royal Palace,
the Plaza de Oriente,
the Opera House and the modern Almudena Cathedral.
This ensemble of monuments is completed by the Puerta del Sol,
a square flanked by select shops, and the "Paseo del Arte", which is where
you will find some of Spains greatest art treasures.
The collections are housed in three buildings. Roughly speaking the world reknown
Prado Museum houses Spains national collection, the
Queen Sofia National Art Centre Museum has the contemporary 20th century collection
and the
Thyssen Bornemisza Museum houses turn of the century and modern art.
Chances are you will not get through any of these collections in one go.
Luckily you can take a break nearby is the 'Campo del Moro'.
A green space with gardens, cafes and a boating lake.
